Government AI projects answer to procurement law, the EU AI Act, and the public record—constraints most agencies have never worked under. These firms build citizen-service assistants, case-handling automation, and document processing for administrations that must explain every automated decision. The EU AI Act puts many public-sector uses in its high-risk tier, which means documentation, human oversight, and transparency duties from day one. Relevant depth sits in AI Consulting for compliance-first scoping and AI Automation for administrative workflows.

Local Insight
Public Sector AI Agencies in Berlin
Berlin holds the densest public-sector AI roster in the register, which follows from the ministries, agencies and research institutes in the city. Birds on Mars open-sourced the irrigation-forecasting system it built for Berlin's boroughs. dida publishes public-process work including rail anomaly detection and legal document review. Dr. Mark Wernsdorfer's clients include Fraunhofer, the BMBF Prototype Fund and the Bayerische Staatskanzlei. wegewerk builds for associations, unions and public bodies; Lautmaler's mobility work covers Deutsche Bahn and the BVG; kiba solutions runs a locally hosted AI workplace aimed at law firms and authorities. The page deepened further in 2026: ontolux publishes work for the Federal Office for Information Security, the German Evaluation Institute and Bezirksamt Berlin-Mitte, Merantix Momentum names the City of Hamburg and the rail-research center DZSF, Ultra Tendency brings public-sector data platforms, and Contiamo publishes client quotes from the municipal utility Stadtwerke Bonn and the housing group Gewobag.
Procurement, not technology, sets the pace here. Ask how each firm has handled a public tender, whether the deliverable can run on your own infrastructure, and who owns the model afterward—several of these teams routinely hand the system over. The EU AI Act puts many administrative uses in its high-risk tier, so the documentation is part of the deliverable rather than an afterthought.
